Toyota Has Spark Only When Releasing Key

1988 Toyota 2 wheel drive. Engine 22R
Question: Hello, I have a question for you. My Toyota was running really nice. It was stored for 2 years in a garage. Our son ended up putting the jumper cables on backwards for less than 5 minutes.

I ended up having to replace the fuse link which went as a result. The vehicle started right away once I put in a new fuse. Problem solved. Drove the vehicle for 3 days then it died. Now there is no spark from the new coil. New alternator as well. Here's what it does. It will crank over with no spark at the coil, but when the key is return to the off position after cranking over the engine - the engine sparks for a second. It is really strange. Any thoughts on this... ? Thanks, David.

Answer: It is possible that something else was burned when the cables were reversed, but it just now showed up. A wire could have melted partially through, and now it shorting out somewhere. This condition of having no spark while cranking, then a quick spark when stop cranking, is usually caused by a bad ignition module or pickup coil. The pickup coil senses engine cranking, the ignition module senses this and tells the coil to fire.

Car Has Gas And Spark But Wont Start

Fuel injectors are spraying gas, car wont start. I have replaced distributor, wires and plugs, and the main relay. I can spray gas into the throttle body and car will run. I took the fuel injector rail and injectors out and watched them spray gas. What else is wrong.

Answer: You did not specify one important thing- when you spray gas into the engine to get it to start, does it stay running or does it die after that bit of fuel has been burned.

If is stays running, then you may want to check fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure can cause the engine to not start, but could have enough to keep it running once you make the car start by adding more fuel to it.

If the engine dies after it burns what you spray in, then you could have bad gas. Could have water in it, or too high an alcohol content. High alcohol in gas, such as E-85 will cause a non E-85 car to not start or run bad.
