Oldsmobile Auto Repair Questions and Answers

This was a brand of General Motors vehicles. It was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In its 107-year history, it produced 35.2 million cars, including at least 14 million built at it's Lansing Michigan plant. Before it was phased out, Oldsmobile was the oldest American automobile lines, and one of the oldest in the world, after Daimler and Peugeot. It was GM's first brand to be phased out in the early 2000's.

Code P0420 Catalytic Converter Failure

To control emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx), a three-way catalytic converter is used. The catalyst within the converter promotes a chemical reaction which oxidizes the HC and CO present in the exhaust gas, converting them into harmless water vapor and carbon dioxide. The catalyst also reduces NOx, converting the NOx to nitrogen.
