Oil Leaking From a Sensor Above the Starter

Oil leak on my 2002 Chevy Malibu LS

I recently blew a head gasket. Took the heads to a machine shop where they were tested and machined along with new valve seals.  The engine is all back together and running perfectly with no leaks or problems anywhere except for an oil leak that has me baffled.  The leak was there when the head gasket went.

The leak seems to be coming from a sensor that is threaded into the block under the front exhaust manifold above the starter.  I have no idea what sensor this is.  There is only one wire going to it and the plug is covered with oil. I unplugged the connector from the sensor and started the car and oil squirts out.  Have you ever seen or heard of this?  And again, what sensor is it?

Answer: Sounds like the part you are describing is the oil pressure sending unit, sometimes called the oil pressure sensor. It is for the light on the dash. This sensor is in an oil galley in the engine, and has full oil pressure behind it. Get it replaced. Only costs about $20. When you remove it, some oil will leak out of the hole in the block. So be sure to not be right under it when you remove it. Also be careful not to hit the starter cable with your tool, or there will be a big spark, and may blow some fuses.

Chevy Malibu Engine Ticking

Question: I have a 2013 Chevy Malibu with only 910000 miles it was run 2 quarts low on oil for a short time. The car has been serviced and still has a hint of top end tic. What's the best place to start looking for the issue.

Answer: If the car was low enough on oil and for a long enough time, there may have been some damage. A tick is usually from the top end- meaning the valvetrain. Possible a failed lifter, rocker arm (or on a 4 cylinder its called a follower), worn camshaft, etc. You would need to start by removing the valve cover and try to determin6e which is making the noise. Also get the oil pressure checked. Low oil pressure will cause engine noises as well.
