Chevy Equinox Has No Power Steering

Power Steering problem with my 2006 Chevy Equinox. Many warning lights. Jump started because dead battery. My Equinox has no power steering is very stiff, no power assist. The service stability light is on. Check engine warning on dash. Many other indicators on as well. This all started after we had to jump start the battery because my son left the key on for a long time. Did a computer blow up? What can i do to fix it. It does start and run normally, just the lights and no steering.

Answer: This is a common problem we have been seeing with these vehicles as well as Pontiac Torrent, Chevy HHR, and Cobalt.

Improper jump starting causes the main 80 or 100 amp fuse to blow. This causes the power steering, and ABS and other computers systems to not have power, therefore do not function. Check this fuse with a test light just like any other fuse. Improper jump starting will also cause codes to be stored in many of the other on board computer, and may cause one or more to fail and need replacement.

A scanner with LAN (local area network) capabilities is need to scan the computer for codes and further diagnosis to determine if any of the other computer modules are damaged.

No Start After Battery Replaced

2007 Chevrolet Equinox.

I had to jump car battery was dead car was fine for a week had to jump again took battery out put in new one now car won't start everything works dash lights radio but car won't start.

Answer: Be sure to check all of the fuses. A common thing to happen is to blow the main fuse in the under hood fuse box.

If I've changed the 80 Amp mega fuse, checked continuity which was good, checked all fuses, good, but still no power steering. What should I look for next? Mechanic thought maybe a bad new fuse. Fuse is good! Need help!

So you have power to the fuse, but do you have power coming out of it?

  • Guest - Natosha

In reply to: Guest - Bill

Mine went out and then I shut my car off and when I started it the power steering was working fine? Any suggestions for me? It's still a little stiff but that's how it was when I bought it a few months ago

  • Guest - Bill

Yes. The testight should light up on each side, showing that voltage is going into it and coming out of it. You can also use an ohmmeter to test for continuity.
